The Israeli company Kedma claims to have developed the smallest cherry tomato.
The world’s smallest cherry tomato is Israeli. It is grown in the Arava desert, on the shores of the Dead Sea, and its size is comparable to that of a blueberry. It comes in red and yellow.
Producers expect the blueberry-sized “cherry tomato” to make a splash in a country known for its agricultural innovation.
The “drop tomato” is about the size of a blueberry, and the Kedma company is located in the Arava desert in the south of the country. Kedma claims it is the smallest ever grown in Israel, perhaps even in the world.

The appeal of the small cherry tomato.
It is a point of pride in a country known for its agricultural innovation. Where fruits and vegetables are taken seriously and where several strains of cherry tomatoes have been invented. “The idea is that it’s convenient,” said Ariel Kidron, a producer from Kedma.
“You can toss it in a salad, you don’t need to cut it. It just bursts in your mouth.”
The seed, initially developed in Holland, has been modified to suit the arid growing conditions in southern Israel. Rami Golan, from the Central and Northern Arava Research and Development Center, has accompanied the project and stated that it is certainly the smallest fruit ever grown in Israel – where tomatoes are incredibly popular.
The small tomato, smaller than an Israeli one-shekel coin, is available in red and yellow varieties.
Early indications are that it could be a big success. Shaul Ben Aderet, a well-known Israeli chef who owns three restaurants, including Tel Aviv’s “Blue Rooster,” has obtained some samples and says that the new strain of tomato is full of flavor. He believes it will inspire an endless number of new recipes. For his part, he suggests it grilled in a pan, baked in focaccia bread, and as a snack.
“It’s very simple, it’s clean, it’s nice, it’s sexy,” he said. In a blind taste test alongside two candies, he remarked, “they would say the tomato is a candy, for sure.”
