Growing Your Strawberries

The origin of the strawberry is not in Israel, but Israelis are starting to adopt it enthusiastically. An interesting plant to grow for children and their parents. It is a good source of vitamins, low in calories, and rich in potassium, iron, and calcium. Strawberry varieties have undergone cultivation and improvement processes over the years that allow us to appreciate them as ornamental plants. The mulberry is a plant that allows for cascading growth, creating a special and attractive look in home design, on the balcony, or in the garden, with hanging baskets of strawberries, adorned with green leaves and red fruits.

Use Your Plants as Interior Design!

Place the strawberry baskets in a sunny spot. So choose the area most exposed to light for these plants. If that is not possible, the pot can be placed in a partially lit area and exposed to the sun for an hour on each side of the pot. To get beautiful strawberries, it is recommended to add 1-2 good handfuls of compost to the potting soil and a liquid fertilizer rich in phosphorus once every two or three weeks.

It is not recommended to plant the plant too deeply, but rather at the depth it was in the nursery, so that the growth of the plant does not cover the stems and leaves. Small pebbles should be placed on top of the soil to prevent parts of the plant from touching the ground and being covered with soil. If you live in an area characterized by cold nights, you can protect the strawberries by covering them with plastic or clear nylon sheets. But when they are heated even slightly, they should be removed; otherwise, the fruits will rot from the heat and humidity. So in Israel, in most regions, the plants will be able to grow without protection.

Here’s what you will need to grow your strawberries:

  1. A pot or container to plant the strawberry plants (with drainage holes)
  2. Potting soil
  3. Strawberry seedlings

Instructions

  1. Buy organic strawberry seedlings from a nursery or garden center
  2. The seedlings should be left in water for about 1 hour before being planted
  3. Choose a pot with drainage holes
  4. Fill halfway or two-thirds with potting soil, plant your strawberries, and continue to fill with soil around the seedlings.
  5. Fill to about 5 cm from the top of the pot.
  6. When planting your strawberries, make sure the roots are pointing straight into the potting soil and that the soil reaches the level of the plant’s crown (where the greenery starts)
  7. Then, water your seedlings
  8. Place your pot in a spot that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day.

When watering strawberries, remember not to overwater. Check daily to monitor their progress. Dip a finger into the soil to ensure it is moist up to 3 or 5 cm deep.

Tips for Monitoring the Growth of Your Strawberries

  • In spring, strawberries are usually the first fruits to ripen
  • Place your strawberry containers in a sunny spot and turn them 180 degrees twice a week to keep the plants evenly exposed to the sun. Check that the soil is moist, not wet.
  • If possible, water in the morning or during the day, but not in the evening, to avoid diseases.
  • You can pick your strawberries as soon as they are ripe!

Enjoy your meal!
