On an official trip to Israel on October 3 and 4, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa.
Throughout her life, Ms. Merkel has demonstrated “exemplary standards of excellence, wisdom, and humanity,” praised Professor Ron Robin, president of the University of Haifa, in a statement.
He added that it was a great privilege to honor her by awarding this degree, which recognizes her leadership, her fight against anti-Semitism, and her participation in strengthening scientific cooperation between Israel and Germany.
During the ceremony, the German leader will engage in an open dialogue with Professor Robin and meet with students from the University of Haifa, including German students, according to Jpost.
In office since 2005, Merkel has innovated in German political and social life.
She is also a proponent of close ties between Germany and the State of Israel. She has been invited to Israel several times and, in 2008, she convened a special meeting of the German government in Israel in honor of the country’s 60th anniversary of independence.
Merkel’s visit comes as part of a bilateral summit between the German and Israeli governments, with several German ministers traveling to meet their Israeli counterparts.
The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 4, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
